Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin. At Newquay Physiotherapy we practice Traditional Chinese Acupuncture together with the more Western technique of Dry Needling.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture:

acupuncture-hand-needlesTraditional Chinese Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of acute or chronic conditions ranging from musculoskeletal pain such as osteoarthritis, sciatica and back pain to headaches, anxiety, stress, fatigue, insomnia and nausea.

It involves the insertion and stimulation of acupuncture needles at specific points across the body to evoke the body’s natural self-healing response which can help reduce the need for drugs. This form of treatment stimulates the release of the body’s own naturally occurring chemicals such as:

  • Pain relieving opioids to help reduce pain. E.g.: pre or post operative pain, musculoskeletal pain, headaches
  • Melatonin for improved sleep and relaxation
  • Oxytocin for relaxation and reduced stress and anxiety
  • Endorphins and serotonin to promote a sense of happiness and well-being

At Newquay Physiotherapy we also practice Traditional Chinese Acupuncture to help relieve pain and musculoskeletal problems associated with pregnancy. This includes pelvic girdle pain, symphysis pubis dysfunction, lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Dry Needling:

acupuncture-needles-for-treatmentDry Needling is an excellent treatment method for targeting and reducing overactive, tight muscles and the locally occurring tight knots or ‘trigger points’ which can be found within them.

By inserting acupuncture needles into the muscle or trigger point, any tight bands within the muscle essentially become ‘deactivated’ or ‘switched off’ helping to reduce muscle tension and tightness in a quick and extremely effective way.

At Newquay Physiotherapy dry needling is used in combination with other physiotherapy techniques to ensure that you receive the most effective treatment. We will fully assess you to ensure that it is a suitable treatment for you.
